Learn Martial Arts Best by Finding a Reputable Teacher
If you decide you want to learn martial arts, there are a few things to consider, and perhaps the most important consideration is the teacher. Without a reputable, skilled and knowlegeable teacher, your progress will be very slow or non-existant, and you could find your wallet as empty as the promises of martial skills and black belts within a year!
Your training and your martial art are serious investments of your time and effort, and therefore require as much prior research as you would put into any financial investment. So take your time, and don’t jump into the first school you find. Do your research.
Learn Martial Arts From The Pros
First things first – make a list of martial art schools in your area. It’s best to stick to local clubs as there will be less barriers to go training, than if you have to walk or jog five miles to get to the training hall. Prioritise them in order of preference. Then, so you don’t jump into your preferred one straight away, go visit them in reverse order.
Look out for public demonstrations and see what they look like, and whether you’d be interested in learning these martial arts. If you’ve just started at Uni, many have loads of martial arts clubs, and during the induction week, they’ll all be looking for new students, and performing at demos. Go and investigate.
Talk to the teacher if you can, either at one of the demos or on the phone. Ask about their style and whether you can sit in and watch a normal class. This is really useful as you can see if the teacher is there or whether he or she gets one of the senior students to do the teaching. Is the teacher involved enough? Does the class run smoothly? Is there an obvious lesson plan or is it just semi-organised chaos?
After the class has finished talk to the students and get their views – they will usually be very favorable and/or biased so you’re not done yet. Talk to the teacher again. Be very wary if you are promised you’ll get your black belt in a year or something else equally unrealistic. Anything that sounds like a promise of fast progression without substantial hard work is to be avoided. The teacher is probably just after the money.
There aren’t any hard and fast rules, but you should reasonably expect to do a grading every 3-6 months depending on how often you have lessons, and how much time you spend training at home on the techniques you have been taught.
Remember also that once you have found a teacher and are learning martial arts, your eyes should still be open. If you are forever going through the same techniques and not being taught anything new, consider that you might be getting taken for a ride. Steady progress is what you should be looking for and a good teacher will provide this.
There are many great teachers of all styles out there, and so long as you do thorough research before signing up, there is no reason that you can’t learn martial arts with the best of them.
