Instructional Martial Arts DVDs

In a recent post, I nominated my Top 10 Martial Arts DVD movies. They are all great and action packed, but occasionally what people are looking for when searching for martial arts dvds are documentary-type films or instructional dvds. I decided to put together a list of available “teach yourself” products for various martial arts, so you can see the true arts without all the movie stunts and special effects. Remember though that to learn a martial art properly, you are learning a philosophy and a way of life, rather than just a fighting system – and it is an understanding and appreciation of the philosophy that means we don’t get mass brawls between martial artists on a daily basis! So it is good to get an instructional martial arts DVD as an “add-on”, to review techniques that you have been taught by a qualified teacher – and that’s the point, it is far better to join a class than to try and learn everything from a DVD.

Learn Karate DVD List

Okay, let’s start with karate since this is one of the most popular martial arts that people start learning. Karate – like kung fu – is not a single all-encompassing martial art; it is split into several distinct styles, each putting a training emphasis on different aspects of the art.

The Kyokushin school – or kyokushinkai – is a fairly modern, full-contact karate style. It is all about practical applications in fighting, and there is a definite emphasis on kumite (sparring). The other commonly taught styles include Shotokan and Wado-Ryu. Shotokan is a “power-house” style emphasising the development of strength and power in technique, and is characterised by deep, low stances to achieve balance while delivering punches (see video below for an example of a Shotokan kata called Tekki Sandan). Wado-Ryu is a softer style; and by “softer” I am referring to how a practitioner interracts with an opponent. In Wado the techniques are, to a degree, influenced by jujitsu, so a punch is not met with an arm-shattering block (like in Shotokan); it is absorbed to a degree, while the Wado defender moves both himself and the opponent. This is similar to many of the techniques of kung fu, sometimes called “leading your opponent into emptiness”.

When you think you know which karate style you would like to investigate, it’s time to check out some learn karate dvd ideas. Karate is generally divided into three sections, each with different emphasis depending on style: kihon (basic techniques), kata (shadow boxing routines) and kumite (sparring). You’ll find karate DVDs on these various options.

  • Shotokan Karate Knazawa 3 DVD Box set Kihon Kumite & Kata
This is a Shotokan karate DVD set comprising all three key aspects of kihon, kata and kumite. It features a master of the style Hirokazu Kanazawa and is a must for all Shotokan students.
  • Wado Ryu Karate Vol. 1
This Wado-Ryu instructional karate DVD features the giant 6’8” Sensei Otto Johnson, a 7th dan master explaining and demonstrating techniques and kata.
  • Kyokushinkai Karate Complete!
This DVD delivers what it says in the title, giving a complete view of the Kyokushinkai style of karate, including warm up exercises, basics of technique, kata and sparring. A great instructional DVD for the beginner.
  • Isshin Ryu Karate’s Tatsuo Shimabuku
Another karate style – Isshin Ryu – demonstrated by the first generation master Tatsuo Shimabuku.
  • Goju Ryu Karate Kata (Tsunami)
Another different style called Goju Ryu karate, and a stunning demonstration of its kata by master Morio Higaonna.

I’ll leave it there and let you explore the options. Remember though, if you do get yourself a “learn karate dvd”, find yourself a book that matches the style so that you can read about the art’s history and philosophy. In my opinion, if you find you really like a particular style, don’t rest until you have found a local school nearby, so that you can get instructed in your new martial art properly!

In future posts, I’ll come back to the subject of instructional DVDs, and each time I will focus on a different martial art.

Taekwondo T-Shirt Designs

Over the last couple of weeks I had some enquiries about martial arts clothing, and although I haven’t produced any designs of my own outside of the Chinese martial arts, I thought I’d try and rustle up some examples for you to take a look at. This time I’ll cover taekwondo t-shirt designs. Why taekwondo t-shirts, you might ask. Don’t taekwondo practitioners wear a gi, like Japanese martial stylists? Yes, indeed they do, but only when they are training in the dojang (training hall). All martial arts foster a culture of comradeship between all the members who train together. It is very natural that taekwondo students will be very proud of their art – like followers of other styles such as karate or kung fu. And since they are not going to walk the streets wearing their gi, an ideal way of demonstrating their belonging to a particular taekwondo club is to wear a club t-shirt. You can get your hands on some nice Taekwondo T-Shirts from places like Amazon.

Of course, wearing a taekwondo t-shirt with your club name is also a great way to publicise your style – and your club – and perhaps to entice new members to join. Most martial arts club t-shirts have the name of the club and perhaps the style name written in oriental calligraphy. If you are part of a large club, perhaps at a university, it is common to have organized social occasions, or competitions and gradings etc. If you are not training or grading, but want to go along and watch, it is more comfortable to wear civvies and a taekwondo t-shirt, rather than getting the gi on. So there are loads of reasons to have westernized clothing that still identify your art, probably another load that I haven’t mentioned! Some taekwondo t-shirt designs might be for girlfriends or boyfriends, or the baby or whoever, saying “My better half is a TKD Ace”, “My TKD daddy will kick your ace”, etc!

Taekwondo T-Shirt Designs On Zazzle

Zazzle is a really good site, where people with a passion for something, and a few design skills can come up with all sorts of products, from t-shirts and hoodies, to coffee mugs and mousepads. There are loads of TKD t-shirts designs on there.

A few tips if you’ve never used Zazzle – if you find yourself on a page with a great design on a lady’s t-shirt, and you are looking for a boy’s, this can be found by clicking on “Men” in the section called “Choose your style and color” – of course, you can also choose your style of t-shirt and color there! You can also click on “Customize” and modify the design to suit yourself. You cannot alter any pictorial design features, but can add, delete or edit any text – you might like the taekwondo Korean design above, for example, but also want to add the name of your club. Best to play around with it and then buy one exactly as YOU want it.

The other thing to consider is that Zazzle is open in several countries (USA, Canada, UK, Germany, Australia, New Zealand) so if you wind up on a page that has a dot com domain name and prices in US dollars, just change the .com for a co.uk or whatever is right for your country, and you will get to the same product, priced for you in your local currency – it is really easy!

So that’s it for those who asked – a way of getting your hands on some taekwondo t-shirt designs. In future I’ll probably rummage around and post up something similar for other martial arts, and maybe group them together by country (eg Chinese for all kung fu designs, Japanese for karate, judo, aikido etc).

Types Of MMA Gloves

Three main types of MMA gloves have been developed since the rules allowed their use. Originally when the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) started, no gloves were allowed at all, and the matches had few rules and no time limit. Later incarnations saw new rules and time limits to make the sport more fan-friendly, and eventually gloves were allowed. They offer some protection to the fighters but are only lightly padded 4 oz fingerless gloves. These are the fight gloves, and there are two other types: sparring gloves and bag gloves. It pays to get yourself a pair of each that you reserve exclusively for competition, sparring and bag work.

Bag Training MMA Gloves

When you are training on the heavy bag, your first priority is to take care of your hands. For this reason the MMA gloves used for bag work are more densely padded than the other types, and there is usually a lot more wrist protection and support. Some of the bag gloves available have a grip bar built into them, and as with other MMA glove types, they are fingerless. Because of the denser padding, bag gloves should not be used for sparring with an opponent, because of the increased risk of injury. Similarly, it is best to use only bag gloves for practice on the heavy bag, both because of the superior hand  and wrist protection offered, but also because the other glove types won’t stand up to the punishment of such workouts, and will need replacing more often.

MMA Sparring Gloves

The MMA gloves used for sparring and practice bouts are designed to prevent injury to both of the fighters. They have softer padding and there is much more of it, so sparring gloves could be 5 oz or higher. They differ from western boxing gloves in that they are fingerless and open at the palm, like mma fight gloves. Two general types are available to buy. The first type looks like a normal MMA glove with separate finger slots, and padding for the knuckles and back of hand; the second type are like traditional sparring mitts with a larger padded area covering the entire back of the hand and fingers, and attached with finger loops.

If you use sparring gloves much heavier than 5 oz, then of course you won’t be allowed to use them in proper competitions. Since fight gloves are normally 4 oz, you may get away the lighter 5 oz gloves, but it would be best just to get some proper fight gloves instead.

MMA Gloves For Competition

MMA Fight Gloves

MMA Fight Gloves

Fight gloves are in essence the same as sparring gloves, but with little or no padding at all. They are more likely to be styled with individual finger slots, and although they are designed to offer a small degree of protection to the fighters, they should not be used for sparring, as unnecessary injuries will result – use sparring gloves for sparring!

In competition you will be expected to use handwraps – like western boxers – so it is a great idea to train using them as well, both so that it isn’t something new to deal with on fight day, and also because it further reduces your chances of getting hand injuries during practice.
